Since their earliest incarnation, comics have been mired in controversy. Not only did many people regard them as a waste of time, but by the mid-twentieth century, comics even came to be seen as potentially harmful to young readers. To counteract this trend, the Comics Magazine Association of America came together to brainstorm and adopt an industry-wide set of standards that would help them gain credibility in the eyes of the public. The entire Comic Book Code, adopted in 1954, is reprinted on this shirt.
